Frequently Asked Questions

General

Do the kids and adults participate at the same time?

Minimally.  The kids and adult courses are different, although there is some overlap.  Most kids will be finished up before only a few adults would ever catch them.

What is the order of this duathlon?

Run, Bike, Run.  Transition 1 or T1 is between the run to bike and Transition 2 is between the bike to run.  All disciplines and transitions are included in the total time of a participant's race.

How is the race timed?

A bib with a special timing chip will be picked up at packet pickup and this bib must be worn during the race to record a participant's time.  As athletes cross the start line, their bib with chip will activate a timing system to start their time and their end time will be recorded as they cross the finish with their bib on.

When, what, why, and how for body marking?

All participants must be body marked for safety, identification, and competition when they pick up their packet.   Participant race numbers will be written on the outside of left/right arms and legs. Their age will be written on their right back calf and distance on left back calf.

Can participants ages 10 - 11 and 15 - 17 change their race distance?

As long as you email the race 7 days prior to the race, we can change your race child's distance.  Fees may apply.

Where can I park on race day?

Parking will be available at the north center parking lot of Kellogg Zaher park.  Map

What if a participant is not present for awards?

We encourage everyone to stay for the awards as we announce and celebrate the podium winners!  If your your name is announced as a podium finisher(1st, 2nd, or 3rd), and you must leave early, please contact us by clicking Questions? on our Race Info page and send us a message to receive instructions for claiming your award.  There will be a $10 shipping and handling fee to receive the award.  Awards will be shipped in bulk so please allow up to 1 month to deliver awards after payment is received.  Awards will not be able to be claimed after 1 month from the race date.

Packet Pickup

Do I need to bring my USAT registration card?

No, our registration system automatically handles USAT membership verification.

Can a friend pick up my packet or a child’s packet?

Sorry, per USA Triathlon rules, only a legal guardian of a minor 17 years or younger may pick up a packet for a registered participant with a legal photo ID in hand and the child participating must be present.  All adult participants must pick up their own packet.

Can I pick up my packet or a child’s race packet on race morning?

Only if this option purchased during race registration.  Otherwise you will have to pay cash or card on race morning with an additional fee.  If you want to add race morning packet pickup after you registered then please contact the race 5 days prior to the race date and we will email you an invoice.  After making payment, we'll add this for you.

Transition

Will participant equipment be safe in transition?

Volunteers monitor the transition area and will check to make sure that equipment matches the body marks on participants' equipment before equipment leaves the transition area.

Is there any time I can enter transition with my child, friend, or family member?

For safety and security concerns, only athletes may enter transition before and during the race.  Only parents of 6 and 7 year olds will be allowed in transition before the race and will be identified by the body marking of their child's age on their leg.  Once transition closes for the race, only race participants and registered volunteers assisting race participants will be allowed in the transition area.

When can participants retrieve their bike and race gear after they have raced?

After all participants finish the bike course, transition area access will open for athletes to remove their equipment.   Participants will need to show their race bib and body markings to enter, verify, and remove their belongings.  For youth athletes, 6 or 7 years old, only one Parent/Guardian may accompany their child for equipment removal.     We thank you in advance for your cooperation on this matter.

Bike

Do I have to wear a helmet for the race?

Helmets must be on and buckled anytime participants are on their bikes. They will be disqualified if they do not wear their helmet.  We ask that participants walk their bikes through the parking lots for the safety of cars, pedestrians, and themselves. All participants must have helmets with the US-CPSC sticker inside in order to race.  This regulation sets performance requirements for helmets to protect bicycle riders from head injuries caused by falls or crashes and required by USAT sanctioned races.

Are mountain bikes allowed?

Yes!  Most kids and some adults ride them.  Bikes must be in working order, and handlebar ends must be plugged.  A volunteer bike tech will be available to help check bikes when participants set up the transition area and they will ensure that bar ends are plugged before the race begins.

What about training wheels?

Allowed:)

Are arrow bars or disc wheels allowed?

Sorry, none of these are allowed for youth participants 17yrs and younger.  Only adults 18 and older.

Run

Can I walk during the run?

Of course!

Can I run barefoot, with sandals, and or with crocs?

No.  All participants must wear shoes.
