Hassett's Hardware is PROUDLY FAMILY-OWNED SINCE 1957.
They’re a third-generation, family-owned and operated local hardware store. My grandfather, Bob Hassett, started with one location in Campbell in 1957, and when that shopping center went up for renovation in 1961, he moved the store north to Marsh Manor shopping center in Redwood City.
My dad, Larry, started working in his dad’s store when he was 13, and after college at San Jose State, took over the store for his dad. In 1993, my dad saw an opportunity in Palo Alto – there wasn’t a hardware store anywhere downtown – and as he tells it, “There was nowhere to buy a hammer.”
He took out a loan from the local Small Business Association and pooled his own personal money to open the Palo Alto store.
When we got the keys, only half the building was still standing. We spent six full months under construction before we could open. Palo Alto Hardware was a kind of community center in those first years – my dad got very involved and people would use the store as a meeting place.
In addition to sponsoring the Silicon Valley Kids Triathlon, Hassett Hardware gets involved with community events like Night of Lights each year in Half Moon Bay and the Belmont Water Dog Run, which benefits local schools in Belmont. They also host their own local events, support local schools and other nonprofits with donations, and most of all, employ incredible people who live near their stores and believe in the core values and mission – serving the community by providing the tools, knowledge and support for people to maintain their homes and businesses.
