RACE FAQS

Q: WHAT IS THE ORDER OF EVENTS FOR THE RACE WEEKEND? WHAT DO I DO FIRST?

A: First, you must attend a Mandatory Athlete Briefing at the Expo on Friday or Saturday.
Second, after your briefing you will pick up your race packet, receive a wrist band (this must stay on at all times and throughout the weekend), a drawstring goodie bag and a race T-shirt.
Third, you must check your bike into transition Saturday, July 23 between 11:00 am – 9:00 pm at Riverside Park on the soccer fields at 101st St. There is no bike check-in on race day.
Transition opens Sunday morning at 4:00 a.m. and closes at 4:50 a.m. for Red wristbands, and will reopen at 5:00 am - 5:45 am for Yellow wristbands. You should have your body marked with your race number (upper arms) and age (right calf) when you arrive to site. Be sure to secure your timing chip secured to your left ankle and bring your clear plastic clothing bag to place your shoes/sandals, clothes and any other things you bring with you to the swim start on the pathway from transition to the start area. Note: these items dropped at the start will be transported to the Finish line for athletes to pick up after the race.
Duathlon athletes will remain at Transition for the start of their race.

Q: IS THE HUDSON SAFE?
A: Yes, the Hudson is safe and clean. Water quality testing is done regularly. It is a tidal river so you swim with the current. It’s also salt water, so we don’t recommend you drink it.

Q: WHAT IS THE SWIM REQUIREMENT?
A: In order to promote safety, the Verizon New York City Triathlon requires each swim participant to have successfully completed an OPEN WATER (not in a pool) swim with a minimum distance of ½ mile within 24 months prior to the 2022 race date. Learn More

Q: WHAT IS THE EXPECTED WATER TEMPERATURE IN THE HUDSON RIVER?
A: Approximately 76 degrees Fahrenheit.

Q: ARE WETSUITES ALLOWED?
A: You may wear your wet suit regardless of water temperature. However, if race officials announce race morning that the water temperature is above the wetsuit-legal limit of 78 degrees, then you will not count for any awards if you wear your wetsuit.

Q: WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE A BIKE OR I CAN'T BRING MY BIKE?
A: You can rent a Cannondale bike from Unlimited Biking, learn more here. If you have any questions about the bike rental program call 212-749-4444 or email sales@unlimitedbiking.com.

Q: CAN I SHIP MY BIKE TO THE RACE?
A: Yes! Our partner offers bike shipping from select areas throughout the U.S. Learn More

Q: WHERE DO I PARK?
A: Click here for parking options.

Q: HOW DO I GET FROM TRANSITION TO THE SWIM START?
A: All athletes will follow the path from Transition to the Swim Start. Duathlon athletes will remain at Transition to start their race with the first run leg. More information coming soon.

Q: WHAT DO I DO WITH MY SHOES AND SHIRT ONCE I GET TO SWIM START?
A: Each participant will receive a clear drawstring bag labeled with your name and race number when you pick up your race packet. Place your shoes/sandals and clothes inside the bag and take it to the corresponding clothing truck at Swim Start.

Q: IS THERE A LOST AND FOUND?
A: NYC Triathlon staff scours the Swim Start area, Transition areas, and Finish areas for anything left behind. Please contact nyctri@LTevents.zendesk.com after the race if you lost anything and hopefully we’ll have it. All lost and found items not claimed within one week of race day will be donated.

Q: IS THERE A WARM UP SWIM OR RIDE ON SUNDAY MORNING?
A: No, neither one will be allowed. Bikes may not be removed from transition once you have checked your bike in. Athletes will not be allowed to enter the Hudson River until the start of their wave.

Q: DO I HAVE TO GO TO THE BRIEFINGS BEFORE I CHECK MY BIKE INTO TRANSITION?
A: Yes, all participants MUST attend the Mandatory Athlete Briefings in order to pick up their packet. Your bike number will be inside your race packet and you will then attach it to your bike. No bikes will be allowed in transition without a bike number, and no bikes will be allowed out of transition without a bike number and corresponding bib number. A non-athlete may check-in a bike for an athlete if he or she is unable to do so on Saturday with a valid photo ID of the registered athlete and their race packet.

Q: CAN MY SECRETARY/FRIEND/TEAMMATE/DOORMAN/NANNY PICK UP MY RACE PACKET?
A: No! Every participant must attend a briefing, pick up their own packet, and sign their own waiver.

Q: WHAT IF I CANNOT ATTEND THE BRIEFINGS?
A: All participants MUST attend the Mandatory Athlete Briefings — no briefing? No race, no finisher’s medal, no glory.

Q: HOW DO I KNOW THAT I'M IN THE RIGHT RACE CATEGORY?
A: Unless you’re a pro, a paratriathlete, or a REALLY fast amateur, chances are your appropriate race category is Age Group. Your Age Group is determined by your “race age,” which is not necessarily your current age. “Race age” is the age you will be at the end of the current year (12/31/2022). So, if you’re 39 but have a birthday in January, you’ll race with 39 year-olds. If you’re 39 and your birthday is in September, you’ll be with the 40 year-olds.

Q: DO I HAVE TO CHECK IN MY BIKE ON SATURDAY?
A: Yes, there is a MANDATORY bike check-in on Saturday from 11:00 am – 9:00 pm. There will be overnight security in transition. There will be NO bike check in on Sunday morning. If your bike is not in Transition Saturday then you don’t race. A non-athlete may check-in a bike for an athlete if he or she is unable to do so on Saturday with a valid photo ID of the registered athlete and their race packet.

Q: HOW MANY WATER STATIONS ARE ON THE RUN COURSE?
A: Five, plus one at the finish. Subject to change.

Q: DO I HAVE TO WEAR THE WRISTBAND GIVEN TO ME AT PACKET PICKUP?
A: Yes, all participants are required to wear the wristband until Sunday afternoon when your bike is removed from transition. Race staff will put these on your wrist as you pick up your packet. This will serve as your identification for entering into the transition Sunday morning and ensure that only you can remove your bike from transition.

Q: DO I HAVE TO WEAR THE SWIM CAP?
A: Yes, the official race issued swim cap must be worn. The color given to each athlete is specific to your wave, so you cannot switch colors, you cannot switch waves, you cannot switch anything.

Q: IS TRANSPORTATION PROVIDED TO TRANSITION SUNDAY MORNING?
A: Please stay tuned for more information coming soon.

Q: HOW DO I GET FROM THE FINISH BACK TO TRANSITION TO GET MY BIKE?
A: You can walk or take a cab. Please stay tuned for more information.

Q: WHAT IS THE BEST PLACE FOR SPECTATORS TO WATCH THE RACE?
A: There are many areas along the course where spectators can catch the action and cheer on their family and friends racing. Learn more about the course. Please check back for more information closer to the race date.

Q: WHAT COOL STUFF DO I GET FOR ENTERING AND FINISHING?
A: First, you get to do the Triathlon/Duathlon. Not many swim in the Hudson on purpose but you can! No one rides their bike on the West Side Highway but you will! All finishers receive a very cool finisher’s medal, a participant t-shirt and an athlete goodie bag.

SECURITY FAQS

• In order to enter the Transition Area, all transition equipment must be loose and in the race issued clear plastic bag that you received at packet pickup or other clear plastic bag. This is just like what you would do with your liquids and gels when going through airport security.

• You can carry in loose items by hand if they do not fit in the clear plastic bag (i.e. a bike pump).

• All unattended bags outside of Transition will be treated as a possible threat by the NYPD. Please exercise common sense and maintain possession of your bag while outside of Transition at all times.

• ALL backpacks, duffle bags, draw string bags, or similar non-translucent bag MUST be empty and placed in the clear plastic bag when entering Transition.

• Hydration Packs (Camelbaks or similar) will be allowed on the race course.

Q: HOW BIG IS THE RACE ISSUED CLEAR PLASTIC BAG?
A: It’s big! The size is 24″wide x 28″high with a 4″ base, and the top closes with a drawstring.

Q: I’M RIDING MY BIKE TO TRANSITION FOR BIKE CHECK-IN ON SATURDAY. HOW CAN I RIDE MY BIKE AND CARRY THE CLEAR PLASTIC BAG?
A: Follow these step by step instructions:

  1. All transition equipment (i.e. goggles, wetsuit, running shoes) must be placed in race issued clear plastic bag(s) in order to enter Transition.
  2. At home, pack all your stuff into your clear plastic bag. Then put your clear plastic bag into your personal bag (backpack) that you are comfortable wearing while riding your bike.
  3. Before entering Transition, empty your personal bag and put it in the clear plastic bag with the rest of your stuff.
  4. Feel free to rearrange your stuff back into your personal bag once in Transition.

Q: CAN I TAKE MY GEAR OUT OF TRANSITION IN MY PERSONAL BAG AFTER THE RACE AND DURING BIKE CHECK-OUT ON SUNDAY?
A: Yes. If you placed your emptied personal bag in the clear plastic bag provided when first entering Transition, you can then put your transition gear in your personal bag to clean up your Transition area after your race, and then walk out of Transition with all your items in your own bag. On Sunday during bike check-out, any new items brought into Transition follow the same security protocols.

Q: CAN I LEAVE MY EMPTIED PERSONAL BAG UNATTENDED OUTSIDE OF SECURED TRANSITION TO THEN GO PICK UP MY TRANSITION GEAR?
A: NO. NYPD will shut down the race if any backpack or transition bag is found unattended. This will not only inconvenience you but all the other athletes either still competing or exiting Transition. Your personal bag must already be in Transition for you to take it out. See above question regarding what to do with your personal backpack or transition bag when entering Transition.
