The following are the guidelines everyone needs to adhere to:
Base Access - If are not affiliated with Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point and do not have a Department of Defense decal on your vehicle; you need to contact the Special Event Coordinator to obtain a “Special Events Pass” by August 16th. If not, you will need to inform the military Police at the Security Gate that you are participating in the “Sprint Triathlon/Relay” and you should be allowed access. Please make sure you have your driver license, vehicle registration and insurance information available.
Package Pick-up - Packages will be available for pick-up in the “Marine Dome Conference Room” aboard MCAS Cherry Point base on Wednesday, 14 August 2019 from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. (Non-DOD participants and participants who does not have a base decal must pick up their package the morning of the event). Timing chips will be distributed race morning.
Parking - Please park in the designated area directed by the volunteers wearing the safety vests. It’s about a couple of minute walk to the Registration area and post-race refreshment area.
Registration - Online registration closes at midnight on August 13th. After that, participants can register on the morning of the event. The fee is $20 more and t-shirts will be given on an as-available basis. Day of registration is highly discouraged due to the long lines and the time it takes to process paper registration forms. Expect to wait in line and know there is no guaranteed ability to process all runners who elect to register on race day to be processed in time for the start of the race. To guarantee a commemorative T-shirt, we highly encourage prior registration.
Checking – In. ALL participants need to check in by 7:15 AM. During check-in it is each participant’s responsibility to verify their name, gender and age prior to the start of the event and report any changes to an individual at the Check-in table immediately. The race will be chip-timed. You must fasten the timing chip via a strap to your ankle prior to the start of the event. Your race number must be worn on the front of your body during the run. It makes it much easier for race timers if your number is pinned to the front of your shirt in plain view, and this is also how race photographers will identify you.
Swim (1st Event)- Stagger start beginning at 7:30 a.m.
Race Numbers will be assigned based on the 100 meter swim time you estimate during registration in order to have the faster swimmers at the front and slower swimmers in the back. This cuts down on congestion in the pool and, in theory, allows each athlete to swim unimpeded. Each participant will have their race number marked on their arms.
The starting order will be based on race number (Racer #1 goes first, then 2, 3, etc.).
After the brief, we will begin the staging process. Please listen for your name.
Participants will be lined up on the swim “on-deck” area and will start approximately every 10 -15 seconds as directed. Memorize your swim wave. You are responsible for making sure you start on time in the proper wave and being on the swim deck area when your wave is called.
Participants are to stay behind the marked area and be prepared to enter the water immediately when their name is called. Participants are to ensure their goggles, swim cap are on and timing chip are on at that time.
DO NOT MISS YOUR START or you will be placed at the end of that wave.
Any stroke is allowed. Participants must complete four laps (eight lengths) before exiting.
Faster swimmers have the right- of- way (To pass swim around to the left of the swimmer.)
Exit out of the pool on the opposite side via the ladder and walk towards the left to the transition area.
If participants need any assistance during the swim, they need to wave their arms and call attention to themselves. A lifeguard will come to their assistance.
** If you are a part of a relay team, make sure you transfer your timing device in the transition area. After the swimmer completes the swim, the swimmer will meet the biker in the transition area by their bike rack transfers the timing chip and ankle strap to the ankle of the biker teammate. The biker then completes the entire bike course, and transfers the timing chip and ankle strap to the runner who is waiting in the same area. The runner will walk/run through the transition area and completes the run course, crossing the same finish line as the solo participant.
