The Flow of a Triathlon
This course as is most common in Triathlon, is in the order of Swim then Bike then Run. Why in this order? SAFETY. There will be a Transition Area with bike racks where participants will transition from one sport leg to the next. Participants will wear a timing chip that is attached to a velcro strap to be worn the entire race on the left ankle. Relay team members will hand off the timing chip/strap to their next team member within the transition area.
- The Swim - this is an open water swim in beautiful Lake Nighthorse. It is a triangular course swam in a clockwise direction. The Sprint race consist of 1 lap and the Olympic race 2 laps. Depending on the number of participants, there will be multiple swim wave starts.
- The Bike - this course is on county roads with a few challenging climbs. It is an out and back 20KM (12.4 mile) course with the Sprint consisting of 1 lap and the Olympic race 2 laps.
- The Run - this course is contained all within the Lake Nighthorse Recreation Area, with the majority of the run on the "Dam Road" which follows along the lake. The course is primarily on soft gravel/dirt surface.
Transition Area
Transition in Triathlon is somethimes considered the "Fourth" race leg. The time in transition counts toward the participants total race time, so it should be planned and practice. Each participant with have a small area beneath where their bike is racked, to place a small towel and place their race gear. It is recommended to lay out the gear in order of race events, with bike gear in front (shoes, helmet, gloves, glasses) and running gear behind (running shoes, visor/hat, race bib belt).
