Dewey Beach Sprint Triathlon History
The first Dewey Beach Sprint Triathlon was held on September 14, 1996. It was held in the back of what was then called Gary’s Surf Spray Café on New Orleans Street in Dewey Beach, Delaware. The after party was held on the roof of the building. The following year it was also held on the same street but quickly outgrew the venue and has been held in the Delaware Seashore State Park ever since. It’s a no frills, grass roots community event and a Dewey Beach tradition that brings athletes and their families from near and far to the resort area. Due to the nature of the ocean, we have had to cancel or shorten the swim several times the last 28 years for rough surf and once for fog. We had no race in 2023 due to a scheduling conflict with the State Park.
Race goal: A safe, enjoyable and fun triathlon/duathlon on a fast and scenic course while raising money for the local community.
Charity: Proceeds from this event and from donations of participants go to Pathways to Success and the JROTC of Cape Henlopen High School. In 2022, over $11,000 was donated to Pathways to Success and to graduating seniors of JROTC.

Race Course
SWIM-1/2 MILE
The swim is a point-to-point swim in the Atlantic Ocean manned by certified lifeguards. There will be 13 waves starting 3 minutes apart. Start is approx. 1/4 mile north or south of the transition area, depending on the current. All swimmers must go completely around each buoy. You must wear your issued swim-cap, timing chip & be body-marked prior to entering the water. The swim will be held unless conditions are considered dangerous. We reserve the right to shorten the swim distance or make the event into a duathlon based on water conditions. Water temperature will be approx. 72 degrees, therefore wetsuits are allowed.
BIKE - 15 MILES
Bike Traffic is an out and back. Stay to your right at all times. The bikes will not cross Route 1. You will exit transition area on the right side and State Park and take a left unto Route 1 and stay in the closed lane of the Northbound Lane. You will be separated from oncoming traffic with cones, but you must pay close attention to the road and all motorists to ensure they are heeding traffic laws. Do not at any point go out of the cones to make a lane pass. If you must pass, pass on the left within the lane.
Bikes will go over Route 1 and make a u-turn by Pelican’s Pouch in North Bethany (across from Sussex Shores Water Tower). Bikes will then return in the right shoulder of the road.
Safety precautions: There will be cones coming from most side streets directing cars to the inner Northbound lane. Use caution negotiating around these cones. There will be plenty of room. Be aware of other cyclists and motorists at all times. There will be neoprene mats over the grates on the bridge.
You will be asked to slow down after you enter back into the State Park and round the Tower.
There will a short contraflow of traffic near uturn to make for a safe turning radius.
RUN - 3.5 MILES
You will exit the transition area on the North West side of the transition area, opposite the bike entrance. You will run across a short (approx. 30 yard) mulch path, designated for racers only. Turn right at the end of the path at Rt. 1 and head North on Highway One through Dewey Beach. Stay right onto Alternate Rt. 1 heading towards Rehoboth Beach. The turnaround will be just before Silver Lake before heading back to the transition area by crossing the same mulch path. After the path, immediately turn right to the finish Line.
