Description

NEW venue and format in 2025! Increasing traffic and other events at the university forced us to look at other options. It's look early in May for a swim so we are changing from a triathlon to a duathlon at Lake Pueblo State Park - Kestrel Pond area (formerly called Rock Canyon Swim Beach)

Mini Mortals Triathlon (MMT) is a youth duathlon following the Ordinary Mortals race and distances are based on the age of participant on 12/31 of this year. For example an 8-year old child turning 9 at any point during the calendar year will compete in the 9-11 year age group and distance:

  • 5-8 years:  0.6 mile run, 1.8 mile bike, 0.6 mile run. One parent may escort on course.
  • 9-11 years: 1.2 mile run, 4 mile bike, 0.6 mile run
  • 12-15 years: 1.8 mile run, 6 mile bike, 1.2 mile run

This event often attracts several families of two or three generations racing together the same day! We are offering a Multi-generational discount to families that compete on May 10th.  Also check out the adult triathlon - the Ordinary Mortals Duathlon for parents and grandparents!

Course maps

This is a wonderful venue for a safe, fun kids race!

Legs 1 and 3:  0.6-mile trail around the Kestrel Pond is the run course. Parents will be able to watch the entire race near transition and the finish line. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/49128698

  • 5-8 yo:     Run 1 x0.6 mi, bike 1.9 mi, then run 1x 0.6 mi lap
  • 9-11 yo:   Run 2 x 0.6 mi laps, bike 2 x 2-mi laps then run1x 0.6 mile lap
  • 12-15 yo: Run 3 x 0.6 mi laps, bike 3 x 2-mi laps then run 2x 0.6 mi laps

The Bike course is a 2-mile lap along the quiet road between the Kestrel Pond race venue and Anticline Pond and up near the main road of Lake Pueblo State Park. This is a really nice flat road with very little traffic and we will have volunteers slowing traffic on either end. One lap for 5-8 yo, 2 laps for 9-11 yo and 3 laps for 12-15 yo.  https://ridewithgps.com/routes/49216549

Race Venue

All new in 2025 - the race will be held at Lake Pueblo State Park - Kestrel Pond (formerly called Rock Canyon Swim Beach). There is no water testing for swimming anymore but the pond has a lovely beach area, paddleboards, kayaks and tubes with a personal floatation device (life jacket) are allowed. Please watch your kids near the water! Feel free to hang out after the race and enjoy the beach, play some volleyball or enjoy the river nearby.

There is plenty of parking at the venue but make sure you park in a designated parking space! Our permit depends on people respecting the delicate prairie so consider carpooling to the race. There is overflow parking east (downstream) from the venue or across the river.

Colorado State Parks does not allow the sale of any items without a lot of red tape. We will have pizza for participants, water and gatorade type drinks after the race. But pack yourself your favorite snacks as there isn't a quick place to grab a bite to eat. If you'd like to set up a vendor tent, no sales are allowed, only samples and information about your organization.

If you're visiting from out of town, Pueblo and Pueblo West has a lot of hotel choices. Lake Pueblo has several campgrounds within 2 miles of the venue that will be open in early May. Check out reservations here.
