NextGen 30

EIN: 83-4283866

Mission: Next Gen 30, INC exists to perform 30 acts of kindness annually in the communities that Genevieve Farnan loved, prioritizing the health and education of young people in the Cape May County community.

History:
Next Gen 30, INC honors the memory of Genevieve Farnan, a vibrant woman who passed away after three years of fighting glioblastoma. She was 29 years old.

Genevieve, or Genny as she preferred, attended Our Lady Star of the Sea School and Wildwood Catholic as a young woman. In high school, she was known for her athleticism, scoring over 1,000 points during her basketball career with the Wildwood Catholic Crusaders. She attended Rowan University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Education: Health and Exercise Science, hoping to share her love of basketball with the next generation.

She began her career as a teacher's aide with the Middle Township Board of Education and Atlantic County Special Service School District. She was also a favorite bartender at the C-View Inn in Cape May for many years.

While Genny was working toward her life goals, she noticed a strange numbness in her right thumb. After an incident where the numbness prevented her from pushing her car into park, Genny realized the severity of the issue and went to the hospital. There, she received the devastating news that she had a stage 4 glioblastoma tumor on her parietal lobe.

Genny maintained hope throughout her battle. She became the 20th member of a Duke University experimental treatment that used a modified strain of polio to recognize and attack cancer cells. Although the treatment was unsuccessful for Genny, it is a promising development in cancer treatment options. In Genny’s final months, her ability to communicate was severely diminished by the spreading cancer. On March 31, 2016, almost exactly three years to the day of her diagnosis, Genny passed away.

We, Genny’s family and friends, established Next Gen 30, INC to remember Genny as she was before cancer took her away from us, and share her spirit with others.

As any picture of her will prove, Genny was beautiful in ways that cancer could not diminish. She was incredibly athletic, with a mental and physical toughness that aided her in her fight. She was deeply ingrained in every community she entered, and volunteered her time and energy again and again for the causes in which she believed. This is the Genny we remember and this is the spirit we hope to share.

This is Next Gen 30.
